Simple HVAC Resolutions You Can Have In 2020

Dec 24, 2019

We are knocking on the door of a new year and a new decade! What are your New Year’s resolutions? Don’t forget to include a few about making your home healthier and safer for your family. How can you do that? It’s actually very easy. Here are some easy-to-follow tips for keeping your HVAC system in great shape in the coming year. Not only will your home’s atmosphere be more comfortable and inviting, but you will also save a few dollars on your energy bills. Go into 2020 knowing that your home and family will be comfy and welcoming with just a few simple resolutions to help make it happen:

Have the HVAC Doctor Make a Yearly House Call

Your HVAC system should have a comprehensive inspection and cleaning at least once a year by a professional HVAC technician. This will reveal any issues (or anything that could become an issue) and allow them to be repaired before they can cause problems later on, possibly in the middle of extreme weather. A professional cleaning of your system, including air ducts will ensure that when it is time to turn it on you can rest assured that it is completely clean, meaning that the air inside your home will also be.

Give Your HVAC System an Occasional Break

Keep your HVAC system working its best by giving it a break whenever possible. For example, build a fire in your fireplace during the winter from time to time. A crackling fire is relaxing, and it will warm your home. If you don’t have a fireplace, set out a couple of space heaters when the weather calls for just a little bit of heat in your home, and turn the furnace off for a little while. In warm weather, turn on ceiling fans and other fans and open

windows to give your A/C a break. Your HVAC system will love having a break and your utility bills will be a bit lower.

Don’t Forget the Little Details

Don’t forget the simplest things that are important to the effectiveness of your HVAC system. Change your furnace’s air filter regularly. This is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to take care of your system. It can make a huge difference in the functionality of your HVAC system though. Change it at least one time in the seasons your system is in regular use. Inspect it once a month and change it more frequently if necessary. If any part of your system starts to make strange sounds or if it is having trouble performing as it is supposed to, call an HVAC professional right away.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats are growing in popularity and with good reason. Your system won’t be putting in overtime once you invest in a programmable thermostat. They remember even when you forget. Set it to a cooler temperature during the day when the house is empty and warm things up in the evening when everyone will be home. If you are going to be away for a few days, simply set it and forget it. It will do the work for you and save you money in the process.

Take Care of Your Outdoor A/C Unit

Few people give much thought to the outdoor parts of their A/C unit during the winter months, but this is an important part of your HVAC system too.

At the time of your HVAC inspection and cleaning, cover it securely with a weatherproof tarp or other covering. This will keep it clean and ready to use when summer returns.

Set Your HVAC Fan on “Auto”

Whenever the HVAC system’s fan is in the “On” position, it is running nonstop. Switch the setting over to Auto. This will allow it to work only when the HVAC system is on. Using this setting will also keep the air filter from getting dirty too quickly.

Use Humidifiers Throughout Your Home

Your HVAC system’s air filters keep the air in your home clean, and you can also help keep the air clean with the use of humidifiers. Air filters trap the impurities and keep them out of the air, and humidifiers help sanitize the air, cleaning it further. Humidifiers also provide humidity which holds onto heat and helps keep your home warm.

Replace Your HVAC System

If your HVAC system is more than a decade old, you may want to consider installing a newer model. Modern HVAC systems are more eco-friendly and efficient. Technology has advanced greatly over the last decade, and these advances can benefit your home. One of our HVAC experts will meet with you and discuss your options regarding upgrades to your present system.
